WhatsApp is introducing usernames — unique handles that work alongside your phone number. This changes something that has been true since the app launched: the idea that your number is who you are.
In practice, it works like this: you choose a username (something like @johnsmith) and anyone can find you and send a message using that handle, without knowing your number. The number stays — it just stops being the only way to reach you.
Why this matters to you?
Think about how many times you’ve had to share your number with someone just to solve something quick — a work group, a contact from an event, someone you just met. With a username, you can be reachable without giving away your real number.
Beyond privacy, there’s another practical upside: changing SIM cards or moving to another country no longer means losing your WhatsApp address. Your @username stays with you regardless of which number is linked.
What stays the same?
Your existing conversations go nowhere. The number doesn’t disappear — it just stops being the only way to find you. Groups you’re already in don’t need any changes.
When it arrives?
The feature is rolling out gradually. You may already have access or see the option to set your username in the coming weeks.
